š¢Donāt use a Friends & Family program to hire interns.Besides the compliance & risk issues associatedThere wonāt be any diversity in the funnel. And you'll be missing out on a large group of prepared studentsItās 2024Which means to attract the best interns, you need toā¦ā Assess schools represented in your employee baseā Then look beyond your typical alumni or core schoolsā Invest the time to get to know the talentā Host virtual or in person eventsā Dedicate blocks for office hoursā Post at multiple schoolsā Invite students to visitWhen your process is set up correctly, following these steps is simple.ā There are 1000s of students looking to join your firm.ā And they have the drive & skill set you want.ā Donāt let your intern program suffer because of outdated processes.P.S. DM me if you want more ideas on how to attract & meet that talent.

Misconceptions about hiring interns:ā They're free laborā They are only good for menial āgrunt workāā It doesn't take much to attract, hire, and onboard themThe reality is pretty different:ā Interns are paid a similar hourly rate as full-time salaried employeesā After a brief onramp period, they can contribute as much as full-time employees (if not more because they're passionate and energetic)ā It takes a solid process in place to market your internships and a strong onboarding process to make it successful for both the intern and the companyHow do I know?Because I was part of a co-op program during my college years and I worked a total of 6 paid internships over my 5-year degree. These days, our company AccessAlly hires interns from the same school my husband and I graduated from. That means we understand the process from both the student and employer sides.Hiring interns has really helped us find amazing people who have joined our team full-time after graduation. It has also given us an opportunity to mentor the up-and-coming generation.š My favorite thing about hiring interns? šSeeing their drive, energy, and optimism. šProbably because that used to be me. But I'm old and cranky now. ;)

š„ Friday Hot Take š„ Is College Major and First Job Relevant to Your Career Now?The relevance of a college major and first job after graduation diminishes as your career progresses. However, a recent article from the WSJ argues that "choice of major, internships, and securing the right first job after graduation are critical to career paths."While certain professions like medicine or law have specific educational requirements, for our hiring processes, we prioritize recent career experience over someone's college major or initial job.I'm also biased, having studied Geography and now working in executive search for middle-market PE firms. In my experience conducting searches across diverse industries and functions for our private equity clients, I've observed less emphasis on college majors and early job choices.I'm curious to hear from others who have transitioned into different roles or industries from their original career path. How has your journey shaped your perspective on the relevance of college education and first job choices? š§ #privateequity #executivesearch #fridayhottake
