150 years ago, on 22th of May 1874 in San Marco church in Milano, Giuseppe Verdi conducted with a premiere of his Requiem, dedicated to his friend, Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni.Here is ''Offertorium'' movement with a really stellar cast - Karajan, Leontyne Price, Fiorenza Cossotto, Luciano Pavarotti and Nikolai Ghiaurov - with orchestra and double chorus of Milan's La Scala. Timeless recording, maybe the best.

"Best" is of course a subjective superlative, although hard to find fault with your selection. . I rank Serafin's 1939 performance with Gigli and Pinza as the best. Gigli's Ingemisco followed by PInza's Confutatis are breathtaking!Most courageous is indubitably the 1944 performance by Theresienstadt inmates. An immortal blow for humanity amidst the most inhumane conditions.

On 23rd of May 1910 was born Franz Kline, American painter associated with the Abstract Expressionism movement of 40's and 50's. He was (with Pollock, de Kooning, Krasner and others) represent of so called American Action painting and best known for his blak and white works. On 22nd of May 1950 in London was a long awaited posthumous premiere of the last song cycle by Richard Strauss ''Vier letzte Lieder'' (''Four Last Songs''). Here is the magical fourth song ''Im Abendrot'' - really heavenly and timeless music piece. I think you'll like it.

Herbert Blount - much better known as Sun Ra, extraordinary jazz musician, pianist, synthsizer player, band leader, composer and much more, was born 110 years ago, on this day in 1914. Here is one of his extravagant performances with his Arkestra on Monterey Jazz Festival with jazz standard ''Take The A Train''. Pure energy.
