150 years ago, on 22th of May 1874 in San Marco church in Milano, Giuseppe Verdi conducted with a premiere of his Requiem, dedicated to his friend, Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni. Here is ''Offertorium'' movement with a really stellar cast - Karajan, Leontyne Price, Fiorenza Cossotto, Luciano Pavarotti and Nikolai Ghiaurov - with orchestra and double chorus of Milan's La Scala. Timeless recording, maybe the best.

"Best" is of course a subjective superlative, although hard to find fault with your selection. . I rank Serafin's 1939 performance with Gigli and Pinza as the best. Gigli's Ingemisco followed by PInza's Confutatis are breathtaking! Most courageous is indubitably the 1944 performance by Theresienstadt inmates. An immortal blow for humanity amidst the most inhumane conditions.
