June is Cancer Survivors Month and today we celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day®, a day of accomplishment, resilience, and unwavering hope. It's a day where we honor the courage of individuals like Susan Hoffman, whose journey through the shadows of cancer has illuminated countless lives with hope and inspiration. Susan was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and it resurfaced again in 2018. As #TraumaAwarenessMonth in May comes to a a close, we continue to celebrate the strength and resiliency of trauma survivors and those who have helped them on the road to recovery. In May 2022, 14-year-old Silas Atkinson faced a life-threatening situation when a tree fell on him during a church camp outing. His mother recalls the harrowing moment she learned of the accident, "I had missed 18 calls — so I knew something was wrong." Rushed to UT Medical Center, doctors worked to stabilize him and manage brain swelling. Despite several close calls, Silas began to improve after 12 days and eventually returned home after 20. Though he now deals with vertical double vision, he remains resilient, learning to drive and working at a special needs camp. “We weren’t sure he’d survive. The fact that he’s done this well with only that one symptom is a miracle,” said his mother. Thanks for sharing your inspiring journey, Silas! We're thrilled to see you thriving again!#TraumaAwarenessMonth #TraumaAwareness #PatientStory #UTMedicalCenter
