Can I move my AT&T Wi-Fi to another house? ›

If you need to move or transfer your AT&T Internet service, we can help you. Simply call 800.288. 2020 to get started with a moving specialist.

If you are an existing DIRECTV or AT&T Internet customer and moving, professional standard installation is included at no charge.

It's actually pretty simple. You just need to unplug your WiFi router and modem, carefully place them in a box (specifically label that box “Internet equipment” so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle of moving boxes) and unpack them when you arrive at your new address.

If you'd like a technician to perform a professional installation, transferring services can take between 5 to 10 business days. If you keep your own equipment and self-install, the process is much faster and will be completed in a day or two.

Make sure you bring your existing AT&T equipment with you. We'll send an email within 24 hours of your move to let you know if you need to return any old equipment. FYI: When you move, we usually waive any activation fees, based on your service. If there is a fee, it will be the same as when you started your service.

AT&T's relocation program provides financial and service assistance to employees who relocate at the company's request.

Equipment fee: No

This is significant because up until early 2022, AT&T charged $10 per month for its equipment. The company required the use of its combination modem-and-router gateway device and didn't allow customers to use their own modem. That meant that you couldn't skip the $10 monthly additional fee.

Most often, homeowners choose to have their internet connection installed on the day of their move or the day after to maximize the use of the Wi-Fi. This is better than having it installed days before your move as you'll have to pay for the cost without anyone using the internet.

Can I move the location of my router? ›

A: Moving your router to a central location, minimizing obstructions, and avoiding signal-interfering devices can significantly improve your Wi-Fi signal strength and coverage. Consider using wireless access points or powerline adapters for extended coverage in your home.

To avoid a fee, return your undamaged equipment within 21 days of the service change or disconnect date. If the returned equipment is damaged due to abuse, we may add a damaged equipment fee to your bill.

If your current provider is available in your new property, then they will do most of the work for you (although often for a fee). Most providers will have dedicated teams to make transferring your broadband to your new home easy. You will need to contact customer services in advance to arrange the transfer.
